Steps on keeping your pipes from freezing.

Insulate Pipes
 if you have pipes exposed to cold weather then it is best to insulate them to reduce freezing. There are pipe insulation sleeves you can by at your local hardware store. 

it is important to keep the heat On in your house or business especially if you are away for a extended period of time. Set your thermostat to a minimum 50° degrees, if you're away for an extended period.

Keep Faucets Dripping, a slow and steady flow of water prevents pipes from freezing.

Outside water sources 
 Disconnect  water hoses from faucets and drain all water from in them.
 Open outside spigots to drain water, and remember to turn them off inside and drain the line when freezing weather is expected.

In the incident your pipes do freeze it is very important to turn off the water at the main shut-off valve. Start to apply low heat, make sure to open your faucets or valves connected to the pipe to allow pressure to be relieved.
