Here is a breakdown of the 3 different categories of water damage

Category 1- Clean Water
This occurs when there's a leak or flood from a sanitary source, like a burst water line from an appliance, a cold or hot water pipe burst, or even rainwater. The water itself isn't harmful in its current state, as long as it's cleaned up and treated quickly.

Category 2- Gray Water
This is caused by leaks or flooding from toilets, dishwashers, and washing machines. This water is contaminated and can cause illness and discomfort if ingested. It can also promote microbial growth, such as mold, which can affect your health.

Category 3- Black Water
This water is highly contaminated and can cause severe health issues. It's caused by sewage backups, still water contaminated with chemicals, and flooding caused by high tides and river water. If your home is flooded by Category 3 water, you will likely need to remove and dispose of anything the water touches, especially porous materials.

I hope this information is helpful.

Insulate Pipes
if you have pipes exposed to cold weather then it is best to insulate them to reduce freezing. There are pipe insulation sleeves you can by at your local hardware store.

it is important to keep the heat On in your house or business especially if you are away for a extended period of time. Set your thermostat to a minimum 50° degrees, if you're away for an extended period.

Keep Faucets Dripping, a slow and steady flow of water prevents pipes from freezing.

Outside water sources
Disconnect  water hoses from faucets and drain all water from in them.
Open outside spigots to drain water, and remember to turn them off inside and drain the line when freezing weather is expected.

In the incident your pipes do freeze it is very important to turn off the water at the main shut-off valve. Start to apply low heat, make sure to open your faucets or valves connected to the pipe to allow pressure to be relieved.

What to do when i have a burst or broken water pipe.

1/28/2025

After a broken water pipe, it is crucial to act quickly to minimize damage. I recommend contacting both a plumber and a restoration company as soon as possible. Repair times can vary depending on the severity of the break, but it's generally best to aim for a fix within a few hours to prevent further damage.

Your first step should be to shut off the main water supply to your house. Then, locate the broken pipe and assess the extent of the water damage and any potential electrical hazards. Once you've done this, you can call professionals like Dogwood Contracting LLC to handle the repairs.

While waiting for the professionals to arrive, it's important to document everything, including photos and videos of the damage. This documentation will be helpful for insurance purposes and for communicating the extent of the damage to the repair crews.

How come mold keeps coming back?

6/25/2021

Perfect conditions. Sounds nice right? You want to plant tomatoes and you wait for the perfect conditions. You want to go to the beach, you wait for the perfect conditions.
Flowers bloom and birds make nexts. Perfect conditions.
What you don't think about is how perfect conditions also means something so disruptive is happening right under your nose. Water travels, this we know. What we think we know is that mold needs warmth to grow. It doesn't.  Usually, mold enjoys the same temperatures that we do.
Extreme heat doesn't kill mold and neither does freezing temperatures. These things both do the same thing, it keeps mold waiting. It sits and waits for the perfect conditions to spread and grow causing destruction in its path.

How does mold get everywhere??

Anyone ever have a toddler with paint?
You tell them to clean up, hand them a paper towel and turn your back. Bad idea? Yup. Can you stop it? Nope, it's already happening.
It started as what you thought was a controlled experiment. You got your plate, your paper and your brush. But you also have dishes to wash and a million other things to do. So you send them off to
"clean up". You come back in and it looks pretty good. A couple of smudges here and there. You look down. Is that a red trail to the bathroom? You follow it. Through the hall, into the bathroom and the sink looks like something you have never seen before.

Water travels. When a leak starts you think it's controlled. One spot right? Get the towels wipe it up. A few days later you see a few small spots in the sheetrock next to where the leak was. There is a good chance it's mold. Water sits and waits. For the perfect temperature, moisture level and humidity. When it has what it needs, it grows and grows and sometimes it only needs 24 to 48 hours to cause a scene. Don't wait. Call Dogwood Contracting at the first sign.
